🔍 Search Made Simple - Contextual & Intuitive

• 6 min read

Today we completely reimagined how search works in RSS Kit. The result? A cleaner, more intuitive experience that works exactly the way you'd expect. Say goodbye to confusing filters and hello to contextual search!

What Changed

  • Search now filters your current view (not all articles)
  • Removed duplicate category and feed dropdowns from search bar
  • Sidebar navigation and search now work independently
  • Removed ~250 lines of complex code

🔍 The Problem We Solved

The old search system had two competing navigation systems that interfered with each other.

💡 The Solution - Clear Separation

We studied how the best RSS readers handle this, and the answer was beautifully simple:

Sidebar = Navigation

Browse categories and feeds. Click to view that content.

Search = Filter Current View

Search filters whatever you're currently viewing. Simple and contextual.

✅ How It Works Now

Your search is now contextual - it respects what you're viewing:

Scenario 1: Search All Content

Click "All Feeds" in sidebar → Search for "AI" → Results: AI articles from ALL your feeds

Scenario 2: Search Within Category

Click "Gaming" category → Search for "PC" → Results: PC articles from Gaming feeds only

Scenario 3: Search Within Feed

Click "TechCrunch" feed → Search for "startup" → Results: Startup articles from TechCrunch only

🎨 What Stayed

The search bar now has three simple, focused filters:

  • Keyword Search - Search titles, descriptions, and summaries
  • Date Filter - All Time, Today, This Week, This Month
  • Sort Order - Newest First or Oldest First

🚀 Benefits You'll Notice

Predictable Behaviour

No more confusion about which category you're searching. The sidebar shows what you're viewing, search filters it. Clear and simple.

Independent Systems

Sidebar navigation and search no longer interfere with each other. Navigate with sidebar, filter with search - both work exactly as expected.

Faster and Cleaner

With 250 fewer lines of code, the search system is faster, easier to maintain, and more reliable.

Pro Tip

Use the sidebar to navigate to what you want to read (category or feed), then use the search bar to filter that content. It's as simple as that!
