Your complete guide to mastering RSS Kit. Learn how to subscribe to feeds, organize categories, read articles, and make the most of all features.

Getting Started

The RSS Kit Reader is your central hub for all your feeds. The sidebar on the left contains all your controls and navigation.

Sidebar Header

  • My Feeds - Shows you're in the feed management area
  • Manage Categories - Open the category manager to organize feeds and folders

Action Buttons

All Read Mark all articles as read across all feeds
Refresh Check all feeds for new articles

Feed Navigation

  • All Feeds - View articles from all your subscriptions
  • Categories - Expandable groups containing related feeds
  • Individual Feeds - Click to view articles, right-click for options

Adding Feeds

There are several ways to add feeds to your RSS Kit reader:

Method 1: Manual URL

  1. 1 Go to Manage Categories
  2. 2 Click the "Feeds" tab
  3. 3 Paste the RSS feed URL
  4. 4 Select a category (optional)
  5. 5 Click "Add Feed"

Method 2: Discover Feeds

  1. 1 Go to Discover Feeds
  2. 2 Browse feeds by category (News, Technology, Gaming, etc.)
  3. 3 Click "Subscribe" on any feed you want to add

Method 3: Browser Extension

  1. 1 Install the RSS Kit Pro browser extension
  2. 2 Visit any website
  3. 3 The extension auto-detects RSS feeds
  4. 4 Click to subscribe directly to your RSS Kit account

Reading Articles

  • Click a feed name in the sidebar to view its articles
  • Click an article card to open and read the full content in a modal
  • Click the star icon to save articles for later
  • Click the read indicator (dot) to toggle read/unread status
  • Click "All Read" to mark all visible articles as read

Tip: Articles are automatically marked as read when you open them in the modal viewer.

Right-Click Menu Options

Right-click any feed in the sidebar to access these options:

Move Up / Move Down

Reorder feeds in the sidebar by moving them up or down in the list.

Rename Feed

Give the feed a custom display name. Your custom name is preserved.

Refresh Feed Info

Re-fetch the feed's original title and icon from the source.

Remove Feed

Permanently delete the feed from your subscriptions. This cannot be undone.

Using Filters

Use the filter buttons in the sidebar to quickly find articles:

Today

Articles published today

Unread

Articles you haven't read yet

Starred

Articles you've saved

Tip: Click a filter to activate it, click again to deactivate. Filters work with your current feed or category selection.

View Modes

Choose how articles are displayed using the View Mode buttons in the sidebar:

Default

Full Cards

Full cards with images, titles, and descriptions. Best for visual browsing.

Grid

Magazine Layout

Magazine-style grid layout. Great for image-heavy feeds like photography or design.

List

Compact List

Minimal list showing titles and metadata. Perfect for quickly scanning headlines.

Categories & Subfolders

Organize your feeds into categories and subfolders. Access the manager by clicking Manage Categories in the sidebar.

Create a Category

  1. 1. Click Manage Categories
  2. 2. Go to the Categories tab
  3. 3. Type a name in the input field
  4. 4. Leave "Parent Folder" as Top Level
  5. 5. Click Create Category

Create a Subfolder

  1. 1. Go to the Categories tab
  2. 2. Type a name for the subfolder
  3. 3. Select a parent category from the Parent Folder dropdown
  4. 4. Click Create Category

Subfolders appear nested inside their parent category with an orange folder icon.

Folder Hierarchy

RSS Kit supports 2 levels of folder hierarchy:

Parent Category → Subfolder → Feeds
  • • Click the chevron arrow to expand/collapse categories
  • Unread counts aggregate across all nested feeds
  • • Click "All feeds" in a category to view all articles from that category

Import & Export

RSS Kit supports two formats for backing up and transferring your feeds:

OPML Format

Standard format compatible with most RSS readers (Feedly, Inoreader, NewsBlur, etc.)

Import OPML

Manage Categories → Import/Export → Import OPML

Export OPML

Manage Categories → Import/Export → Export OPML

Includes: Feed URLs, titles, and category structure

JSON Format

Full backup format - includes all RSS Kit data and settings

Import JSON

Manage Categories → Import/Export → Import JSON

Export JSON

Manage Categories → Import/Export → Export JSON

Includes: Feeds, categories, read states, starred items, custom names, settings

Tip: Use OPML to transfer feeds between different RSS apps. Use JSON for full RSS Kit backups.
